Charlton Lane Hospital in Cheltenham
Charlton Lane Hospital
Opened in the summer of 2010, Charlton Lane Hospital provides assessment, treatment and care for older people with functional mental health problems and people with dementia.
I have been a patient at Charlton Lane twice in 2012, generally good patient care.
My feelings are that there is not enough to do, some of the staff are not qualified and spend a lot of time talking to each other, whilst vulnerable patients are left to do all sorts of things that could be generally helped.
The ward I was in was not for people who had dementia, but at busy times there were folks with severe dementia on the ward. The staff could not cope with them, leaving other patients on there own.
Some of the patients with dementia were violent, a large TV was smashed by a gentlemen with a walking stick. This was not replaced leaving patients with nothing to do. There was inappropriate behaviour between a female and male staff member. I reported this but nothing was done.
Access to ones rooms was difficult as many keys were lost, someone tried to take all of my clothes, claiming they were hers.
I was not sectioned, I was a voluntary patient and able to go out when my husband arrived. I believe that people with depression, or any other mental health issues should have the same rights as someone in a ordinary hospital.
I think Charlton Lane is a good unit, but the staff generally felt that they could treat patients like second class citizens.
Charlton Lane unit does not have the expertise in their staff, one ward manager told me " you shouldn't be here, if it was left to me I wouldn't have admitted you". This was a senior ward manager, I did not cause any trouble and was always willing to shop for patients who were without money, or were sectioned. I am fortunate to have a husband who also supports me, we are Christians and see this as what "Jesus would expect of us".
