JSL Electronics
I have had one experience of this business, but it's very unlikely that I will have any more. I took a number of items in for servicing and/or repair, and it took months before I had them all back.
An amp was returned with a reasonable explanation of what the problem was and why (given its age) it could not be fixed. A turntable was serviced, as was a double cassette deck. I'm told they are fine again and to be fair I have to take the chap's word because I have not set up the system since moving into a rented (thus temporary) flat. For this work I was given no written quote nor any receipt for the cash fee, even after repeated requests.
At the same time I took in an older item for a service and repair. This was the item that took months. Visual evidence proves he mended a worn mains cable, but I was told he also opened it up to do some repairs to the amp. I just received word today from a qualified engineer who I took the item to in desperation to have it operational that the amp has not been disturbed for years!
The wooden exterior of this unit also came back with a scratch on the lid and some damage around the hinges of the drop-down vinyl storage compartment lid. The on/off button on the amp is also less responsive than it was. To top it off, the replacement styli that I was told his supplier couldn't get were then sourced by me, and once returned they still didn't play records properly!
I admit I should have asked to hear something play before I took the thing away, but a man offering his services should offer customers the chance to hear something before they take their items away to ensure their satisfaction.
Repeated phone calls to him for explanation and to make things good were met with claims of personal issues to deal with. Again, a cash fee was not acknowledged with a receipt.
In short, nice enough guy but know what you want done and get a written quote, seek evidence of work done and get a receipt!
