The Bankrupt Shop in Newcastle
The Bankrupt Shop
Personally, I think you'd have to go a long way to get good quality fabric like you find here and all at £3.95 per metre. I can't speak for the fancy goods sold here for I'm only interested in the fabric which is really what the shop is all about. Yes, it's upholstery and curtain fabric but I've never been misled in any way to believe it was anything else. An experienced needleworker will know by the feel and the way the fabric hangs if it is suitable for clothing as I have used curtain fabric on occasions when I've wanted to achieved a unique style. As for the staff, I always find them pleasant and very helpful. For me, this shop is an Aladdin's cave of luxurious velvets, shiny satins and much more; all in glorious colours.
I have shopped at the Bankrupt Fabric Shop for a good many years, buying not only fabric, but mirrors and furniture too. In recent years there has been a steady decline, in the variety and selection of choice available, but also in the quality of the products. Everything has an air of decay or dings about it. Would you like to pay £85 for a mirror that, while big, has got cracks and broken edges to it. Recently the fabric marketed is upholstery fabric, but is being sold as fabric suitable for drapery, cushions and Roman blinds. To cap it all the staff leave a lot to be desired. If they gave proper advice they would not need to refund any fabric sold. My experience working in retail for a large chain was to leave the customer with a "wow" feeling. You certainly won't get that.
