Murray Edwards College was originally called New Hall and founded by Dame Rosemary Murray in 1954 as a College for women, as it remains today. Initially sited on Silver Street, the Darwin family (Charles Darwin) gave their family home ‘the Orchard’ to the College in 1962 to allow them to grow and meet demand for more students. Darwin College now stands on the old site on Silver Street in Cambridge city centre.
