Hawkes & Son
We are a family run business based in the Wiltshire and Bath areas, specialized in the repairs, restoration, renovation, replacement and installation of sash and casement windows.
Products & Services:
We used Mick Hawkes and his firm to replace sash windows in our property in 2009. The work carried out was shoddy and a significant number of snags resulted. Some of the new windows could not be opened, there was a fair amount of damage done, and the final re-decoration (within the contract) was not done. Mick Hawkes left us with £500 of work unfinished and a repair bill of over £2000 to put right his efforts. We proceeded down the legal route to reclaim this money, but it turned out he had no assets (business, house etc) registered in his name because of previous County Court judgements. Mick was elusive and abusive throughout and was an utter nightmare to deal with. We had our fingers badly burned - avoid him like the plague!
Mick seemed very nice, knowledgeable and helpful when coming to quote. After the job was done (2019) I had a few queries and remedial items. He swore at me on the phone, and physically threatened me, then took me to court rather than fix the minor issues. He didn't turn up the first time - got the court to reschedule the hearing by telling them his son (Troy) was dead! He also failed to turn up to the rescheduled hearing. This guy is the epitome of a cowboy builder.
We had Mick's son Troy and his colleague Todd working at our house for a few weeks recently. Our house has oak windows and doors inside and out. The oak outside had deteriorated to the point where it was looking shabby in places and was badly weathered. Troy and Todd meticulously sanded, resanded, oiled and reoiled until they were looking fabulous. Some of the windows and doors didn’t close properly inside and outside. All have been sorted. They needed to take away a couple of our doors overnight to work on in their workshop as they were in such a state and they came back looking like new. Mick would come around every so often to inspect some of their work whilst they were here and where necessary to suggest a different method of repair.
When they said they were coming they arrived on time. The price in my opinion was very reasonable. Troy and Todd worked hard whilst they were here only taking a couple of short breaks per day.
In summary I would say that Mick and his team are a very professional family business who know their trade inside out. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
I had exactly the same experience as the previous person.
8 windows were repaired very badly. None open easily now, and 3 do not open at all. I had repeated contact with them to arrange to finish the job, but they have not kept appointments and let me down every single time. Mick is abusive and standards are poor. Don't be fooled by the flashy website - these people are completely unprofessional!
Used Hawkes & Son to repair my sash windows in September. However Mick the owner took the money but didn't come do the job as he promised. I would not recommend it to any one and will not use them again. Mick is very rude and swearing in text message when I asked him to pay me the extra money back.
