We design and build special purpose machines for various industries. Typically, our enquiries come from Pharmaceutical, Medtech, Electronics, Industrial and other technology driven areas. We also do some unusual things like the gold Chronophage clock currently on display at the Science Museum.
The first Chronophage is on permanent display outside Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. We are normally approached with a specific need / problem, which requires a solution. The solution might take the form of an automated assembly machine, which assembles multiple components; a test machine for measuring specific parameters on a client’s product; automated process machines or helping the client to develop a new product.
Generally our systems are one offs but they do not normally have the luxury of being regarded as prototypes. Our machines are often “mission critical†to the client and can be required to operate 24/7.
Our solutions enable our customers to increase productivity, maintain consistent quality, generate quality data and quite often help them gain a competitive advantage.
The variety of equipment developed and built by Huxley Bertram includes high pressure mud viscometers for the oil drilling industry, computer controlled hydraulic presses for metal forming research, microfludics sampler, powered wheelchair for children, HGV tachographs, domestic appliance controls and a world leading research tablet press. The brand qualities we aim to bring to every enquiry / project are simplicity, appropriateness and the aesthetic.
The company, which is based in Cottenham, near Cambridge is owned by the two directors, William Bertram and Stewart Huxley, both Cambridge University Engineering graduates, who started the company in 1979. Huxley Bertram have machines operating in Europe, North and South America and Asia. The company chiefly caters to the high tech sector, with clients such as Schlumberger, Pfizer, Philips, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, CCL, Bespak and Abbott and have supplied over 1000 solutions. We are currently collaborating with Queen Mary College, University of London to commercialise some IP, which is targeted at the Pharmaceutical industry.
