John decided that he wanted to work for himself and promptly began cleaning windows, before long he was being asked to clean offices, cut grass and a whole multitude of other things including carpet cleaning. John soon settled on the carpet cleaning side on things as he liked the profit margins that this generated but also soon realised that you could only clean a small amount of carpets in one day with his trusty portable extractor and set about looking for a more productive alternative, having looked at various 'dry' systems he settled upon a truckmounted system, the year was 1987 and this was to be the first truckmounted carpet cleaning system in the Southwest, to this day we still have this very machine here at Hydramaster! After purchasing several machines from the same supplier who was at this time the only UK based supplier of these machines it was very apparent that they were unable and unwilling to give any kind of customer service, on one occasion John had to pay for a courier to make a same day round trip to collect / exchange known faulty components to complete work aboard a PO ferry which was due to set sail. The machine that had failed was only a week or so old and due to the supplying companies lack or concern and support he decided there and then to look for alternative machine for his own purposes.
Several months later and after meeting with various machine manufacturers he visited Hydramaster corporation in Seattle and immediately formed a good relationship with what was at the time a family owned and operated business, the year was now 1995 and we were then known as Carpetmaster UK. We set about building a supply company that was based around giving the very best level of customer service that was possible along with good value reliable equipment, in the following years that followed John's carpet cleaning business went from strength to strength running at time up to 20 machines on a nationwide basis. John eventually sold this company to help fund the building of a custom built premises for supplying and fitting truckmounts.
